Why ID photo sizes are confusing
Specifications mix millimeters, pixels and DPI: millimeters describe print size, pixels describe the digital file, and DPI converts between them. Checking only one number leads to photos that are right in pixels but print too small.
Common ID photo sizes
| Type | Print size | Reference pixels at 300DPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | 25x35mm | 295x413 |
| Small 1-inch | 22x32mm | 260x378 |
| 2-inch | 35x49mm | 413x579 |
| Small 2-inch | 35x45mm | 413x531 |
| HK/Macau travel permit | 33x48mm | 390x567 |
| Visa/passport (common) | 33x48mm to 35x45mm | Follow the embassy rules |
Visa and exam requirements change, so always confirm against the official instructions before submitting.
Crop online in four steps
- Fix the background color first following the ID background color tutorial
- Open the image cropper and frame the head and shoulders at the required ratio (about 5:7 for 1-inch photos)
- Enter exact pixels in the image resizer to avoid server-side rescaling
- Export the required JPG with the format converter and control file size
Composition rules
- Leave 3-5mm between the top of the head and the frame edge
- Head height is about 70% of the photo height
- Eyes level; reshoot if the shoulders are tilted
- Avoid heavy beauty filters, which can fail facial verification
Digital vs print
Electronic review checks pixels and file size; printing checks millimeters and DPI. Verify both, and keep a high-resolution master so future applications only need recropping.
