Why make a grid collage
In Xiaohongshu, Instagram and friend feeds, an image sliced into tiles takes over much more screen space and creates a satisfying reveal when swiping. It works well for product teasers, campaign posters and profile decoration.
Preparing the source image
- Ratio: a square master for 9-grid, 3:1 for a 3-tile row, 3:2 for 6 tiles
- Resolution: each tile should be at least 1080x1080, so aim for a master around 3240x3240
- Safe margins: keep key text and faces at least one tile away from cut lines
- Visual center: place focal points near the four grid intersections so each tile works alone
Online splitting steps
- Open the image splitter and upload the master
- Choose the grid: 2, 3, 4, 6 or 9
- Preview the cut lines; make sure no text or face is sliced
- Export all tiles, named in order
Publishing order is the common mistake
Platforms display multiple images in selection order. Rehearse in drafts:
- 9-grid: left to right in the first row, then row by row downward
- 3-tile row: left, center, right
- Save files in a folder numbered 1-9
Fixing tiles afterward
If one tile is poorly framed, trim it with the image cropper and re-split. If the master is low resolution, re-export it at 2K/4K with the AI image editor first so tiles stay sharp.
