WebP vs JPG vs PNG: Speed & Quality

The fundamental difference

JPG is lossy and ideal for colorful photos. PNG is lossless with transparency support, ideal for logos and screenshots. WebP, introduced by Google, supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and is typically 25-35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

Choosing by scenario

E-commerce and marketing images

Use WebP or high-quality JPG for product photos; keep PNG for assets needing transparency. Cutting a 2MB main image to 400KB noticeably speeds up listing pages.

Web design assets

Keep logos and icons as PNG or SVG. Screenshots with text look cleaner in PNG, but as article illustrations WebP is often less than half the size. Export raster versions of vector logos with the SVG to image converter.

Animation

Simple animation traditionally uses GIF, which has limited colors and large files; short video formats are usually better. To create a GIF, use the GIF maker.

Does conversion hurt quality

Repeatedly converting between lossy formats accumulates artifacts. Always export from the original or a PNG master, keep JPG quality at 80 or above, WebP at 75 or above, and convert only once. The image format converter handles all conversions locally in the browser.

How to verify

  1. Zoom in and check text and edges for blocking
  2. Compare formats side by side with the image comparison tool
  3. Test loading order on the real page so the key image loads first
  4. Keep a JPG fallback if older devices matter
