Why change the background color

ID cards, social security records, visa applications, exam registration and employee badges all specify different background colors, usually white, blue or red. Photo studios charge again for every color change, but an electronic photo can be processed online.

Prepare the source photo

  • Face the camera straight on, no hat, ears and eyebrows visible
  • Even facial lighting, no strong shadows
  • The higher the resolution, the cleaner the edges
  • Wear clothing that contrasts with the target background (not white on white)

Change the background in three steps

Step 1: Cut out the portrait with AI

Open the AI background remover and upload the photo. The model detects the face, head and fine hair automatically and returns a transparent background within seconds.

Step 2: Fill with the required solid color

Use the AI image editor to replace the background with a standard solid color:

  • White: most visa, passport and social security systems
  • Blue: employee badges, some exams and school systems
  • Red: some certificates and internal records

Always follow the exact color required by the issuing authority; when unsure, white is the safest default.

Step 3: Inspect hair and shoulder edges

Zoom in on the hairline, side hair and shoulders. If old background color remains, repair it with inpainting in the AI image editor so no colored halo remains.

Crop to the required size

Apply the required aspect ratio with the image cropper, then set exact pixels with the image resizer. See the ID photo size chart for common formats.

Final checklist

  1. Background color is uniform with no gradients or stains
  2. Portrait is centered with correct headroom
  3. File size, pixels and format match the instructions
  4. Keep a transparent PNG master so you can change colors later without cutting out again
